Flag Football Game Rules

Teams

Indoor Flag Football is played with six players per team. Offence consists of five receivers (two wide receivers, two slot receivers and one snapper) and the coach as QB. Defense consists of five defenders plus the coach who is the rusher.


Equipment

  • Players may wear running shoes or cleats
  • Football gloves are optional
  • Jerseys must be tucked in with belt and two flags on either hip

Downs

  • Five (5) downs for the field for Senior Flag Football leagues
  • Six (6) downs for the field for Junior Flag Football leagues

Timing

Game is 40 minutes run time. When time expires, if the ball is not snapped, that will be the last play. If time expires as a play is run, the offence can finish the play and run one additional play.

If the final play as time expires is the fifth/sixth down, the opposing team gets one play.


Game Play

  • Everyone is an eligible receiver
  • Ball starts on the own five yard marker
  • Ball carrier is stopped when a flag has been removed from their belt
  • If a flag falls off of a player's belt during the play, the play is blown dead where the player receives the ball NOT where the flag is dropped
  • No flag guarding
  • No blocking
  • Defensive coach must count eight steamboats before rushing the QB
  • QB is sacked if tagged by the rushing coach
  • Regular football rules apply including offsides & pass interference at the discretion of the coaches
  • Interceptions are allowed
  • No fumbles allowed - once ball hits the ground the play is dead
  • No diving
  • Extending the ball is not allowed
  • Any coach can call a penalty or blow the play dead

Scoring

  • Touchdown = 6 points.
  • 5 yard convert = 1 point
  • 10 yard convert = 2 points

Playoffs

4 team format

  • winner of #1 seed vs #4 seed plays winner of #2 seed vs #3 seed in championship game.

6 team format

  • quarter finals are #3 seed vs #6 seed and #4 seed vs #5 seed. #1 seed vs #2 seed play friendly.
  • semi finals match #1 seed vs lowest seeded remaining team, #2 seed vs highest seeded remaining team.
  • winners of semi finals play in championship game.

8 team format

  • quarter finals are; #1 seed vs #8 seed, #2 seed vs #7 seed, #3 seed vs #6 seed and #4 seed vs #5 seed.
  • semi finals match highest remaining seed vs lowest remaining seed, other two teams vs each other.
  • winners of semi finals play in championship game.

General Information

Participants must consider the safety of all players in the game. Aggressive play must be tempered to avoid unnecessary body contact and the possibility of injury to opponents. Sportsmanship and consideration for the well-being of others is an integral part of the game.

The rules exist to ensure that no team creates an unfair advantage over the other team. Therefore, infractions such as interference, tripping, unnecessary roughness, obstruction, offside, unsportsmanlike conduct and objectionable conduct can be called by the coaches. It is imperative that all participants display sportsmanship during a game.
